Reading Walla news, I've suddenly encountered another word I've never met before.

Its meaning is the same as רק or בלבד: only, just this, the only thing.

Dictionaries (like my Even-Shoshan) don't mark any stress in this word, which implicitely means the stress is on the last syllable.

Hebrew, what a language! In Hebrew, she is hee, he is hoo, and who is mee...

Now, how would you read this word?

הִוא

That's a standard Hebrew word הוא (meaning "he"), but it's vocalized like the word היא (which means "she".) You can find it in the biblical texts all over the place.

כֹּל - כָּל - כֻּלּוֹ

Why this strange orthography? Why the word keeps changing the vowels in its every transformation?

Why do we write this word without Vav in most cases? Why in Ktiv Maleh we write כל אחד and not כול אחד? And if we write it without Vav, why the Vav might appear in the phrase זה הכול? And why even then it's considered "optional" and not mandatory?

Hate this browser. IE7, I mean.

It brings up more trouble than any other browser. (And I'm trying to make my blog readable at least with Firefox and Opera, besides IE.)

It screws up Hebrew fonts, especially if the text is vocalized and the font is large enough. The line spacing is not perfect in Opera too, but still IE seems to have most trouble displaying the vocalized text.

Augh...

Apparently, Opera has some problems with displaying Hebrew fonts too. It's XXI century, for God's sake! When was UNICODE invented, only last year?
