Now that you understand roots and patterns, let's see them in action with practical examples.

Root: כ-ת-ב (K-T-B) - "Writing"

Hebrew Pronunciation Meaning Pattern
כָּתַב katav he wrote CaCaC (basic verb)
כּוֹתֵב kotev writes / writing CoCeC (present/participle)
כְּתָב ktav handwriting, script CCaC (noun)
מִכְתָּב michtav letter miCCaC (noun)
כְּתֹבֶת ktovet address CCoCet (noun)

Root: ל-מ-ד (L-M-D) - "Learning"

  • לָמַד (lamad) - he learned
  • לוֹמֵד (lomed) - learns, student
  • לִמּוּד (limud) - study
  • מְלַמֵּד (melamed) - teacher
Key Insight: Once you know a root, you can often guess related words even if you've never seen them before!
